A prior post with a current twist: today’s local tech gossip rag, mentions a Google faux pax that has been off-putting to Madison Avenue.
Yes, we have all made mistakes. I’ve made some… twice just to be sure. Yet, making an error isn’t the point. The point is what can be learned from it. The question I took away from the post, “Is what is being offered of great value?” No one can ignore great value. It compels us to respond. This has all kinds of implications, specifically in recruiting – from corporate to agency settings, from the selection process to recruiting programs.
A few (more) specific questions:
- As a recruiter, what am I offering? Is it me, my firm, my connections, the opportunity?
- Is what I’m offering universal or unique? What is specifically of value?
- Does the recipient share my same valuation of what I’m offering? How do I know this?
- Am I communicating value of what I will be offering (was offered) throughout the selection process (first contact, negotiation, closing, and on-boarding)?
When a recipient rejects my offer, it isn’t that they are “looking the gift horse in the mouth.” I just haven’t connected with the recipient.
Before you make your offer, make sure it is of great value. 8~)
